Palmela was named European City of Wine 2012
The announcement was made at the end of November, Vilafranca del Penedès (Spain), where the Board of RECEVIN was convened to review the applications submitted. The contest aims to distinguish a symbol of the city development in wine, European and Palmela is thus the first European capital of wine, a move that will have an annual basis. The repeated successes of the wines of Palmela and the region exhibitions nationally and internationally, the successful experience of partnership between producers, municipalities and other economic agents that the Association of the Wine Route of the Setubal peninsula, and also the proximity of the 50th edition of feast of Harvest, were the main factors which led the City of Palmela to submit your application. The partnership work that has been developed between local authorities, farmers and various stakeholders within the sector, the vast calendar of events related to wine and, of course, the proven quality of the wines were deciding factors for victory.
The Municipality of Palmela want to share this award with all the producers in the region said that in recent years the high quality of our wines, but also with all institutions, public and private associations that have made Palmela the symbol of a wine region rich and diverse, and that wine is an important axis of development and quality of life. The title of European City of Wine 2012 will be an important contribution to extend the reputation and prestige of the wines and the region of Palmela.
